Change around us – Change of Funchal
Change is all around us and it is interesting to us to record the change. Change is basically part of our lives and we believe that Escape Games help you to cope with the change, by preparing you to think quickly on your feet. Basically you sharpen your decision making skills and so we decided to monitor the change. That is why we created our project of OLD vs. NEW (#oldvsnew).
We have first located and purchased several interesting postcards of Funchal and other Madeira towns. The aim was that the postcard must deliver overall picture of the locality and plus it must be still currently accessible. This was not always as easy and sometimes it required us to go on the locations several times in order to get “the right angle” of the picture, to capture the main points within the picture, which would allow us to correctly overlay the pictures and create nice crossfading Videos or GIFs. Today’s featured location is:
Funchal, Sao Martinho, Ajuda – Ajuda a place with many things to do when in Funchal
The picture was taken from point nearby the freeway (Via Rapida) as you can see it on the map, on this page, you can see the point where from it has been taken as the place where the icon of the Camera is located. Also for better understanding two lines are drawn which are showing you what you can see on the pictures and also on the GIF.
As you can see we can follow on the pictures the following monuments which have been also used for alignment of the Old and the New Pictures and which are also one of the many things to do in Funchal or a place of very well known Funchal hotels. Ajuda itself or Our Lady of Ajuda is a part of Sao Martinho which is a part of Funchal. Ajuda is located south of the center of the parish of Sao Martinho (St. Martin), the waters of the Atlantic and a volcanic cone Pico da Cruz (the Peak of the Cross), which is guarding it from the prevailing northerly winds . It borders on the east side with the White Church of Sao Martinho and the west side with the Piornais. The parts of Amparo and Nazareth border in the Northwest, North and Northeast. It was once a rural land dedicated to agriculture as the Levada of Piornais were bringing the water there.
The most significant places used for aligning of the photos are:
Praia Formosa – The beach Praia Formosa, situated in the capital Funchal, just 10 minutes drive from the city centre, offers visitors three small sandy beaches and a large pebbled beach. The water quality is certified by the ‘Blue Flag’ and a team of lifeguards is watching over the safety of the bathers.
Doca do Cavacas – Doca do Cavacas is a seafood restaurant and swimming pools uniquely perched on the edge of a small rock that overlooks the natural water swimming pools, ocean and nearby Praia Formosa beach.
Great way to spend afternoon is to walk the Levada dos Piornais – The levada is on the photo on the left edge warping around the hill Pico da Cruz. This levada takes the water from Ribeira dos Socorridos, where Fajã do Poio is located, and is 11km long and takes about 4h to walk it.
Ilheu do Gorgulho. It is a small island 15 meters tall and 60 square meters of area. The depth there is 17 meters on the outside facing the ocean, and on the inside facing the shore it is only 14. It is safe to swim there and the water is crystal clear. The all bottom of the sea is brown/black sand.
Pico da Cruz – Pico da Cruz viewing point is situated between the parishes of Câmara de Lobos and Estreito, and it’s 936 meters high. This viewing point offers visitors and locals breathtaking panoramic views over some parishes.
Madeira Magic – It is a new place with many things to do. It includes Health club with gym, swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi, restaurant and lounge bar Magic on the Rocks, Tea house, garden and children’s club.
Clube Naval do Funchal – Funchal Naval Club aims to incentive the practice of sports activities, mainly of nautical nature, and to promote the cultural, social, environmental, recreational and leisure satisfaction among its members.
Ponta Gorda piscinas (Swimming areal) – The Ponta Gorda bathing complex offers two swimming pools, one children’s pool, sea access, sandy areas for sports practice, kindergarten, changing rooms, sun beds, parasols, first aid centre, surveillance service as well as snack bars and restaurants.
Lido – Since the opening of a new coastal promenade, the Lido area in Funchal, already well known for the many tourist facilities it offers, developed even more into an extensive leisure zone much appreciated by locals as well as tourists. Lined with palm trees and bordered by splendid botanical gardens, this promenade links the Lido area with the pebbled Praia Formosa beach at the western end of Funchal, offering breathtaking views over the sea and towards Cabo Girão to all those who stroll, walk or run along there …or who just relax on one of the many benches! There are three public swimming pools – the Lido swimming pool complex with the largest seawater pool, the Clube Naval and the recently opened Ponta Gorda swimming pool complex – all of which offer extensive leisure facilities with seawater and separate children’s pools, sea access, sports activities, restaurants, snack bars, etc…all you need for spending a relaxing day at the sea front! Along the Lido promenade you will also find some nice restaurants of different categories.
Estrada Monumental – is a main street in Funchal which goes through the Ajuda part of town. Estrada Monumental starts nearby famous Reid’s Hotel and winds through Funchal all the way to neighbouring city of Camara do Lobos.
Forum Madeira – Shopping center and cinemas.
Pestana Bay Hotel – It is located on the island’s largest pebble beach – Formosa beach.
Madeira Regency Cliff – In an excellent cliff-top location, overlooking the natural beach of Praia Formosa. It is closed now.
Centromar Apartments – Which Offers accommodation in Funchal was used for alignment of the old and new phote.
Also the Escola profissional de hotelaria e turismo da madeira – Which is hotelschool operating since 1992 was very important for the alignment of the photos.
